For sale is a lovely teacup and saucer made by Royal Albert of Longton, England. The pattern is known as "Old Country Roses". The cup measures 2 13/16" tall and 3 1/2" wide at the rim of the cup. The handle measures approximately 3 3/16" at the highest point. The footed base measures 1 13/16" wide. The saucer is 15/16" tall and is 5 1/2" in diameter.
The "Old Country Roses" pattern depicts clusters of roses in full bloom on both the cup and the saucer. They are burgundy, peach and pink surrounded with lush foliage and buds waiting to bloom. The pattern is just lovely and it also know as the best selling dinnerware pattern in the world. This pattern is still being made today in several different pieces. It is now available in linens and other goods to be able to decorate with this lovely pattern throughout the home. The exterior of the cup has a large cluster of flowers on the front and back side of the cup. The interior of the cup has a smaller cluster of flowers for the right handed tea drinker to enjoy. The shape of the cup is known as a Montrose shape. The rim, foot and handle are trimmed with 22k gold as well as the scalloped edge of the saucer.
Royal Albert has a history and reputation for being able to cater to people from all walks of life, from modest to the most exquisite taste. Many of their early wares were commemorative to the Royal family. The founder, Thomas Wild, had a love for flowers which inspired many of the patterns.
The teacup and saucer are in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The pieces are signed "Old Country Roses, Royal Albert, Bone China, Made in England, 1962 Royal Albert Ltd". This cup and saucer set was made circa 1962.
