For sale is a lovely pen tray made by Tiffany Studios of New York, New York. The pen tray is done in the "Grapevine" pattern. The patina on the metal is the very popular real gold gilt patina. The stained glass is the beige opalescent Favrile. The pen tray is 9 5/8" wide, 2 3/4" deep and stands 3/4" tall.
This pen tray displays an acid etched Grapevine overlay pattern on a beige or cream opalescent glass. It has 2 pen or pencil holders crossing the inside of the etched pine needle overlay. You can use up to 3 pens comfortably and could probably fit 6 inside the holders. This pen tray sits on 4 bun style feet. This is a rather hard to find desk item without major gold patina loss. The patina is very nice on this one!
The pen tray is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. This is very important because the value of the piece is diminished when there is cracked glass. The only issues are some staining in the inside corners and minor gold patina wear. The pen tray sits nice and even and shows no sign of damage on the front and top views. The pen tray is properly signed on the bottom with the "Tiffany Stvdios New York" impressed mark along one end with the pattern number "1004" impressed just to the right of it. The "v" in "Stvdios" denotes this as an earlier piece.
This is a very nice Grapevine desk set item. The gold patina was considered to be a more expensive finish than the green/brown patina. The Grapevine pattern was one of the first desk set patterns created by Tiffany Studios. Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system after 1902. Since this has a 4 digit number this pen/pencil holder was made circa 1905-1910. Those of you who are looking for nice example of this pen holder in the Grapevine pattern with gold patina will be happy with their purchase.
