For sale is a very nice desk set item made by Tiffany Studios, New York. The item is known as a picture or calendar frame but technically it is a large calendar frame. The desk set pattern is one of the more popular patterns. This is known as the "Zodiac" pattern in Tiffany desk set fancy goods line. The frame stands 7 1/8" tall and is 8 1/4" wide. The calendar or picture window is 5 5/16" wide by 4 3/8" tall back side measurement. The front window view area measures 4 7/8" wide by 3 3/4" tall.
The frame is made out of bronze and displays an outstanding original gold acid etched small snowflake patina throughout. This patina is called a "Dore' Patina" which is "Gold" in French. The picture calendar frame shows the 12 signs of the Zodiac calendar along the top, bottom and sides. The top left and right hand corner has an arts and crafts spiral design to complete the look of this frame. The frame is supported by an easel back that is as solid as the day it was made.
The frame is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no dents or major dings to the metal. The frame has all of its original screws. The frame is signed on the back window of the frame. It is impressed with the micro "Tiffany Studios New York" signature mark along with the model number "943". There are some numbers lightly scratched below and that read "2094". This is more than likely a special order number.
Tiffany started using a 3 digit numbering system after 1902. Prior to this time frame they were 2 digits and before that had no number. Since this has a 3 digit number it was made after 1902. I can date this by the micro mark to be early in the 3 digit dating. Those of you who are looking for a nice HTF frame to add to your Zodiac collection need to look no further. You can find the similar size frame in pattern number 942 with some ease but the 943 large calendar frame is much harder to find. It is common practice today to use this as a picture frame because when found they are usually missing the calendar pages or they are incomplete.
