For sale is a very nice jardinière made by The Weller Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is known as "Elephant Ear" and the glaze is the "Bedford Matt Green". The form is a jardiniere or planter. The jardinière has some size as it stands 6 1/2" tall and is 8" in diameter. The top opening is 6 3/8" inside measurements. The bottom has a diameter of 4 5/8".
The planter displays a very pleasing round tapered shape with a flat round foot. There are 4 embossed Elephant Ear leaves surrounding the pot. They are set against a deep matte green glaze that made this Weller Line so desirable to collect. The glaze is pretty uniform throughout. This glaze is very similar to Hampshire's Cucumber matte green glaze and I suspect that Weller created the their matt green line to specifically compete with them.
The jardinière is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is unsigned but it has the painted blue green glaze on the bottom side. This is a tell tale sign of unsigned Weller in the Bedford Matt line. There is a few pin pops but other than this there are no excuses for this piece. Those of you who decorate in the arts and crafts, mission style will surely welcome this accessory into the home. It will also enhance any matte green art pottery collection.
This would look outstanding with anyone decorating with Stickley or mission arts and crafts furniture. I'm sure the buyer will be very please with their purchase. The Bedford Matt Green line was considered an early line by Weller Pottery and this jardiniere was made circa 1905-1920.
