Van Briggle Pottery, Indian Maiden On a Rock w Turtle Flower Frog, HTF~~~

For sale is a very large Indian Maiden centerpiece bowl made by The Van Briggle Pottery Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This bowl and flower frog is done in the ever popular Ming Turquoise glaze. This centerpiece is very large as is 15 1/2" wide, 12" deep and 9 5/8" tall. The flower frog measures roughly 5 1/2" in diameter and stands 2 7/8" tall to the top of the turtle's head.

The centerpiece bowl has a beautiful two toned blue glaze known as Ming Turquoise on both items. The centerpiece displays an Indian maiden kneeling on a rock over looking a small pond. Inside the pond is a flower frog with 13 holes to hold flowers. Its subject matter is another smaller rock in which a turtle is resting, poised and looking up at her. This frog sits inside of of the bowl comfortably. You can tell its is an Indian Maiden as her loin cloth is roped tied. I have also seen this center piece called "Lady of the Lakes". It was designed by Bill Higman back in the 1940's.

This centerpiece bowl and flower frog is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There is some crazing upon close inspection. This piece shows signs of use as it is has some freckling on the inside bottom showing that this was used as it was intended to be. There is a factory hole as to allow for the expansion in cooling so this large piece wouldn't crack during the cool down. There is a small firing line along the back edge as this is also factory. The centerpiece bowl is signed on the bottom with Van Briggle's incised double A logo for Artus and Anna Van Briggle along with the incised script lettering "Van Briggle Colo SPGS."The Turtle flower frog is signed the exact same way and the color of the bottom clay tells me these have traveled together since they were made.

This is a nice mid century piece of Van Briggle in a very desired glaze and subject matter. This centerpiece bowl and turtle flower frog does not show up all that often. I believe this piece to have been made in circa 1945-1950. I'm sure the buyer will be quite pleased with their purchase.
