For sale is one of the rarest of the desk set items to be found and it is made by Riviere Studios of New York. The Item is a "Picture Frame" and it is done in the "Grapevine" desk set pattern. The patina on the metal is the most desirable green/brown. The stained glass is the green/white opalescent glass. The picture frame is a nice size as it is 6 7/8" tall, 8 1/4" wide. The square opening is 5" wide by 3 5/8" tall. The front window view is 4 1/2" wide 3 1/4" tall.
This picture frame displays an acid etched Grapevine overlay pattern on green/white opalescent glass. The exterior of the frame has the most decorative beaded border. The patina is about as good as it gets. It has the very organic green brown coloring. The picture frame is supported by an easel back stand. This easel is in fine working order. The picture is very easy to change this can also be used to house calendar pages. This picture frame looks almost identical to the ones that Tiffany Studios, New York made. The green to white opalescent glass is an identical match in most cases. Riviere Studios competed heavily with Tiffany Studios for their share in the fancy goods desk set items market place. Their quality was almost as good. It is believed that several workers from Tiffany Studios migrated to Riviere and taught them how to make them.
The picture frame is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips to any of the glass. The beaded border is tight and shows no signs of damage. There is a tiny piece of missing metal on one branch on the top off center piece of glass. The picture frame is signed on the back side of the rectangular back with the impressed "Riviere Studios" on the top side of a horizontal diamond impressed shape and "New York" impressed on the bottom side of this diamond cipher mark. There is no pattern number impressed into the metal that I can see.
This is an extremely nice picture frame in excellent used condition. When these are found there is usually some kind of damage to the glass. I am very happy to report that this one has "No Cracked Glass" These picture frames from Riviere Studios are much rarer than their competitor Tiffany Studios. Some of their picture frames will bring almost as much value as Tiffany Studios when found in excellent condition like this one. I'm quite sure the buyer will be very pleased with their purchase. This picture frame was made circa 1905-1915.
Riviere Studios was in business from 1904-1931. They had to close their doors due to the Great Depression in 1931.
