Grueby

$1,975.00

For sale is a wonderful piece of art pottery made by The Grueby Pottery Company of Boston, Mass. I have a "Squat" round shaped planter that is done in Grueby's unique matte speckled green/brown glaze. The planter stands 2 1/4" tall and is 5 3/8" in diameter.

The planter depicts beautifully tooled and carved wide body leaves that rise up from the bottom and overlap each other to the left at a slight angle. The leaves rise up the the lower neck where the vessel turns in and has a wide border that leads up to the raised and slightly flaring top lip. There are 11 of these overlapping leaves. The glaze is quite different from the normal matte green glazes you are accustomed to seeing. The glaze on this vessel is a deep speckled green with overtones of a brown glaze. A very pleasing and unique colored glaze from Grueby Pottery.

The planter is considered to be in very good to excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips. The piece is signed with the impressed Grueby leaf logo along with "Grueby Pottery Boston U.S.A." circular mark. There is also the artist initials "S.M." incised for the Grueby artist that carved this piece. There are also the numbers "11/30/06" incised into the bottom as well. I believe this was the month "November", and day the "30th", and the year it was made 1906. There is also a black ink mark or glaze number 406 D and suspect that this is the form number but not sure. It has 6 round felt tabs adhered to the bottom so it wont scratch any furniture.

Those of you who collect Grueby art pottery vessels know that this is somewhat a rare find. There are very few examples of this vase documented in past sales with the auction houses. Of all the art pottery manufacturers of the day, not one single art pottery company had any stronger influence on the Arts and Crafts pottery movement than Grueby. Grueby Pottery has always proven a worthy investment as they do nothing but rise in value year after year. I would say this piece of art pottery was made circa 1906 based on its marks.

This piece would look outstanding on that Stickley, Mission, arts and crafts style bookcase. I'm sure the buyer will be extremely happy with their purchase.
