Hampshire

$350.00

For sale is a wonderful arts and crafts cabinet miniature made by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, NH. The shape is known as a "Cabinet Miniature Corseted" vase. The vase is a nice petite size as it stands 3" tall and is 1 7/8" in diameter outside measurement at the mouth or opening of the vase.

The vase displays an arts and crafts pattern of vertical leaves with flower buds at the top. These are done in raised relief. The glaze is thick and you have to look real close to see this detail. The vase has a wonderful deep mulberry glaze that is very similar to Van Briggle's Mulberry glaze. Hampshire Pottery made only one version of this form.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The only excuse is 1 tiny glaze pin pop along the bottom and this is considered insignificant. The vase is signed with the script "Hampshire" mark on the bottom along with the incised "M" in a circle. This mark was to honor Cadmon Robertson's wife "Emoretta". She was the sister of the founder, James Scollay Taft and he was the head chemist. There is also the experimental numbers written in a deep green glaze and its reads "95634". Normally these numbers are all written in a blue glaze. I have never seen the experimental numbers in green but it is correct.

Hampshire Pottery started producing matte glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main competitor Grueby Faience of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown.

This piece can be dated based on the "M" in a Circle mark. This was the mark that Cadmon Robertson used during his tenure with Hampshire Pottery. This vase was made, circa 1904-1914. Corseted miniature vases from Hampshire Pottery are quite rare and seldom come up for auction, never mind an experimental piece. This vase is a nice example in both form and glaze and would look great in that Stickley Arts and Crafts cabinet. I sure the buyer will be quite pleased with their purchase.
