Roseville

Sold

For sale is one of the most desirable Art Pottery Patterns to collect made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville. Ohio. The item is a vase and it is done in the highly desirable "Sunflower" pattern. The vase is a nice cabinet size as it stands 5 1/4" tall and is 5 1/8" in diameter outside handles measurement. The top of the vase has an opening of 3 1/4" in diameter inside measurements and the bottom of the vase having a diameter of 2 1/4".

This is a very pleasing pattern created by Roseville Pottery. The vase has a classic urn shape with 2 applied handles at the shoulder to just under the lip of the vessel and these resemble ears. The piece displays six embossed mature Sunflowers along the upper portion of the vase. They are supported by detailed veined leaves with the curving stems swaying their way to the bottom edge. The Sunflowers are individually defined and display a deep yellow glaze with the leaves being a Verdi green with hints of blue glaze. These flowers are set against a grainy brown background glaze that bleeds down from the top to a green/blue and a much deeper blue glaze at the bottom. There is lots of blue along the bottom quarter. The grainy texture gives this piece that added realistic look as if you were looking at the Sunflowers growing out of the ground.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The vase is signed on the bottom with a black triangular label that reads "ROSEVILLE POTTERY". It also has a red number 3 written in grease pencil. This is part of the shape number in the Roseville Sunflower catalog pages. This is one of the harder to find shapes in the Sunflower pattern to acquire in one's collection. It was not pictured nor is it listed in the shapes in any of my Roseville reference books and I have 3 of them. This was known as shape number 513 -5" in the Roseville's catalog pages. This vase was made circa 1930 just prior to the Great Depression.

This is a wonderful example of Roseville's Sunflower pattern. The mold is crisp and it has very strong glaze colors. This piece is also very clean and appears that it was primarily used as a cabinet piece. I'm sure the buyer will be well pleased with their purchase.
