For sale is a very large arts and crafts designed centerpiece bowl or jardiniere made by The Van Briggle Pottery Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This bowl is done in the ever popular Ming Turquoise glaze. The jardiniere is very large as it stands 6 3/4" tall and is 16 3/4" wide outside handles measurement. The body or round portion of the center piece is 14 1/4" in diameter. The foot has a diameter of 7 1/8". The bowl weighs 12 lbs 2 oz with no packing. I show a size comparison next to a gallon of milk.
The centerpiece bowl displays a very large squat buttressed handled jardiniere or bowl form. It has a wonderful two-tone blue glaze which is known as "Ming Turquoise". This jardiniere has wonderful embossed arts and crafts raised pattern of chain link patter that consists of diamonds and circle or O shaped links. This chain pattern surrounds the entire neck of the vessel. The vase is further accented with 2 wide buttress handles opposite of each other.
This jardiniere is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. This piece shows signs of use as it is a little bit dirty inside the vase and the lighter blue. The vase is signed on the bottom with Van Briggle's incised double A logo for Artus and Anna Van Briggle along with the incised block lettering "VAN BRIGGLE U.S.A."
This is a nice early piece of Van Briggle in a very desired glaze and Arts and Crafts pattern. This piece does not show up all that often. I cannot find a form or shape number in the Van Briggle Book. I would consider this style to be rare. Since we have the "U.S.A." mark on the bottom we can date this piece to have been made in the early 1920's. I'm sure the buyer will be well pleased with their purchase.
