Roseville

$165.00

For sale is a very lovely piece of art pottery made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The Pattern is called "Bittersweet" and the form is a large cornucopia vase. It is done in the most popular gray and mauve glaze combination. The vase has some size to it as it stands 8 1/2" tall, and is 5" wide and 3 3/4" deep. The foot is oval or egg shaped and it is 3 7/8" wide by 3 3/8" deep.

This vase has a lovely matte gray background glaze that is accented along the foot with a deep mauve color. The top lip of the vase is also accented with this same glaze as the foot but lighter. The vase displays a wide top lip to display many flowers with short stems as the hole is rather small. The body sits on a grainy textured oval or egg shaped foot. The vase displays a very pleasing pattern of light brown berries with green leaves across the front and back side displays beige leaves. The gray background has a grainy texture. The handle is molded and shaped to resemble a brown branch. The mold is crisp and well defined. The color mix is nice and even.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, or chips. The piece is signed on the bottom with "Roseville U.S.A." in raised relief along with the mold number 822-8" also in raised relief. These are a few // marks written in a blue grease pencil. There are also the number 9 incised into the clay just above the "v" in Roseville". This was more than likely the finishers numbers.

This is not a commonly found line and it is quite lovely. I'm sure the buyer will be quite please with their purchase. It was created late in Roseville's years as this vase was made, Circa 1951. This pattern was in production for only 3 years as Roseville Pottery closed in 1954. These large cornucopia vases in this pattern are becoming harder and harder to find. The collectors really hang on to them.
