Roseville

$695.00

For sale is a large piece of art pottery made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Monticello" originally spelled "Montacello". The shape is a large double handled swollen form vase. The vase is quite large as it stands 9 1/4" tall and is 8 1/2" in diameter outside handles measurement.

The vase displays a strong Native American Indian style. The vase is a large swollen form shape with wide opening to receive flowers. It has a double banded painted decoration at the top in a pleasing sage green glaze with a deeper brown in the middle. It is intersected by what appears to be an 2 Indian shaped shield symbols on each side. The shields are done in a white and black glaze. These are set against a background of a 2 toned heavily mottled Terra Cotta background glaze. The mottling on the bottom and all over the vase is just outstanding!! The vase is accented with 2 ear shaped looped handles that are applied at the waist and raise up to the lower neck of the vessel.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition. There are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There are truly no excuses to be made here. The vase is signed on the bottom with a triangular black paper label that reads "Roseville Pottery". There is also the number "564" written in a red grease pencil. This is hard to see but it is there. This was the model number for this vase. This shape is known as shape number 574-9" in the Roseville Monticello catalog pages. To have an original factory label is a real bonus with this vase as these usually came off when soaked in water.

This is a quality art pottery vase in a not so commonly found pattern. In fact there are only 15 cataloged shapes in this pattern. Recently more have been found but they are limited. Those of you who collect Monticello which was originally called "Montacello Ware" will welcome this addition into your collection. It works well with the Mission Arts and Crafts style of decor. It also works in a Southwestern setting as well. This is considered to be an outstanding example especially in this mottled glaze combination.

This vase was made Circa, 1931.
