Hampshire

$1,195.00

For sale is an outstanding arts and crafts piece of art pottery made by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire. The piece is called a "Buttressed Handled" vase and this form is quite hard to find from Hampshire Pottery. It is also rather large as it stand an impressive 10 3/4" tall and has a diameter of 7 1/2" outside handles measurements. The foot has a diameter of 5 3/8".

The glaze is done in Hampshire Pottery's most sought after mottled matte cucumber green glaze. This vase displays a wonderful arts and crafts shape of a footed Grecian urn vase with buttress style handles. This vase has a very nice mottled matte cucumber green glaze with some nice glaze runs. The glaze strongly resembles the skin of a cucumber that is just ripe for picking. The inside also carries this wonderful matte green glaze with a waterproofing glaze added inside. Hampshire Pottery also made this form with a white glaze liner. The collectors don't seem to like that version as well as the glazed green ones such as this one.

The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, or chips. There is small amount of excess clay on the top bottom foot. This is glazed over and considered factory. The vase is signed on the bottom side with the Impressed "J.S.T. & CO. Keene, NH". This is a very early mark and would date this to have been made before Cadmon's tenure with the pottery. Since he worked there from 1904-1914 and used the M in a circle mark this one was considered an earlier mark. This is known as shape number 8 in the Hampshire Pottery catalog line. This is one of the hardest Hampshire Pottery vases to acquire. I have only had a few of these in my 38+ years as a dealer and collector.

Hampshire Pottery started producing Matte Glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main Competitor Grueby Faience of Boston, Ma. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown.

This will make a wonderful addition to any matte Pottery collection of Art Pottery and would look great on that Stickley Mission Arts and Crafts Bookcase. This Vase was made Circa 1891-1900.
