For sale is an Umbrella Stand made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is the rare "Matt Green" pattern line. The Umbrella stand is quite large as it stands 19 1/2" tall and is 10 1/2" in diameter outside measurement.

The Umbrella stand displays an outstanding matte green glaze throughout. The color is balanced and there is wonderful mottling in the glaze. The pattern is quite rare as it depicts Water Lilies in full bloom and Lily Pads throughout the upper portion. There is an Arts and Crafts pattern rising up from the water lily. It shows a Poppy flower and buds in full bloom on a long stem and stylized leaves above the main Water Lily. There are 2 of these on this stand, one on each side. The next area of decoration or belly band shows more of a trailing pattern of Water Lilies and Lily Pads. The lower third section of the stand has a vertical pattern of paneled and ribbed arches accented with round indents at the bottom. The top lip has a slight curl in it to grasp and move the stand with some ease.

The umbrella stand is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, dings. This is an extremely clean stand. It was taken care of during its life as it shows minimal wear. It looks almost as good as the day it was made. The stand is not signed. At first I thought it was made by Weller Pottery but upon closer inspection I noticed the bottom was glazed green and not painted a blue green like the Weller ones. Roseville was known for glazing their bottoms to match the sides. You can see the Ohio Valley yellow beige clay outer border on the underside as well. This is also a tell tale sign of early Roseville.

This is an extremely Rare Umbrella standing in outstanding condition. I have searched the internet to find a similar one in matte green or even to document the pattern. I was unsuccessful in every search engine such as Google, Yahoo, AOL, Bing and a few others. I could not find another example to compare this with. I checked all my Pottery books on Roseville with no so luck as well. There is no other explanation as to the rarity of this stand.

I believe this piece to be quite early in Roseville's matte green production. The piece was made Circa 1905-1910. Those of you who collect matte green and Arts and Crafts design pottery will surely welcome this addition into your collection. This would look just wonderful in that Arts and Crafts, Mission style of home.
